Ethics Between Strangers
The Code:
This code of ethics was designed as a guideline for moral human behavior specifically between strangers, or two individuals with no personal acquaintance. It describes proper etiquitte one would show to say their post man, the woman at the bus stop, their waitress at Denny's, or a pedestrian passer-by. Just because you don't know them, does not mean they do not deserve the same kindness and respect you would show your mother or best friend.
We are not familiar with the overwhelming majority of individuals on our planet, and by bettering the interactions with these persons, we better our lives and the lives of others, contributing to the overall happiness of our human society. You alone must make the choice to contribute or detract from the morality of our society as a whole, starting with how you treat those around you. Everything you do makes a difference. Go ahead, make someone's day!
1. Respect- Yep, you guessed it. . . R-E-S-P-E-C-T! But what does it mean to YOU? The dictionary definition of respect is consideration for someone's personal wants and wishes. But it could really mean anything! For instance, always respect the personal space of others. . . i.e. keep your hands to yourself; don't invade your neighbor's bubble if they don't want you to. Also, respect the right for the man on the subway to wear a fuzzy orange coat with a red shirt and fur boots, it's his choice, not yours. Even if he looks horribly tacky, keep your judgments to yourself, please!
3. Courtesy- Do a good deed every once in a while, you just might like it. Hold the door open for the man struggling heavy boxes. Even when you're in a hurry, don't cut people off. . . they have someplace to be, too! Say bless you when someone sneezes. Make eye contact to let people know you're listening. Courtesy is as simple as having good manners.
2. Kindness- Just be nice for goodness sake! If someone says hello to you on the street, say hello back! Walk an old lady across the street. If an unsuspecting woman is about to sit in gum, tell her! What goes around comes around. Kindness is contagious.
4. Equality- This one is pretty self-explanatory. . . Treat everyone equally! Don't let your actions change just because of the person's gender, color, or age.
